According to the American Dental Association, dental sealants are virtually 100% effective at preventing tooth decay. While the effectiveness of dental sealants is unquestionable, the percentage of school-aged children who have them has historically been low. A study published in the March 1996 Journal of the American Dental Association reported that less than 20 percent of the nation’s school-aged children have dental sealants on their permanent molars. Mira
Consulting, Inc., in a unique partnership with Albuquerque Public
Schools*, has been providing dental sealants to second and third grade
students since 1998. Our
focus is in removing the barriers to dental care for those children
who have historically had limited access to dental care. In many cases, our program is the first time that students
have had any contact with a dental professional.
With the help and support of school administration, teachers
and school health professionals our program attempts to achieve the
following objectives.

4 To educate students in proper dental care. We emphasize preventive care and the importance of proper nutrition. 4 To explain the value of dental sealants. We use oversize models and videos to ease anxiety. Students can easily visualize the “ouchless” procedure. 4 To educate parents, explaining the value of proper dental care and dental sealants for their children. 4 To deliver services by trained dental professionals with multiple years of experience. We have over 8 years of direct experience in delivering school-based dental sealant services. We use state-of- the-art portable dental equipment to ensure comfort, quality and a high retention rate of dental sealants. 4 To partner with local dental care providers and other health care providers to service those students with serious dental or medical needs. 4
To be sensitive and responsive the needs of the community.
All our educational materials are bi-lingual and in
those instances where it is appropriate, we provide bi-lingual sealant
